So one method of girth measuring is to wrap a string around your tool and measure the length, well if I put a ruler across the top of mine (recent shameless pic below):

at the widest point its 1.75" across which should be a 5.5" girth, but if I do the string method its like just under 5", which tells me my piece isn't round...wondering what kind of variation people see
